I came up with CitySprout as an attempt to connect people with nature, regardless of how easy it is for them to get to wild places. By helping people notice plants on their doorstep,

I hope that, with CitySprout, people will feel more connected to nature, themselves and their communities.

I’m a freelance mycological & botanical illustrator creating commissioned artwork for organisations committed to social and environmental justice.

My foraging workshops introduce people to wild food, medicine & crafts, and highlighting foraging as a restorative, communal, and quietly resistant practice.

Raising awareness for the nature on our doorsteps is what drew me to CitySprout. I am a fungal ecologist, long-term conservation volunteer and passionate advocate for UK wildlife.

Promoting opportunities for young people to engage with UK wildlife is something very important to me!

I’m really drawn to the interfaces between community, nature, and sustainable food systems. I think that when each of these parts is working well, it results in wonderfully resilient, fulfilling, and creative abundance.

CitySprout is a project centred on urban botany, boldly inclusive of communities not usually recognised as stewarding a wealth of wildness on their doorsteps - and I love that!

CitySprout is a Community Interest Company. Here's what that means...

CICs are companies set up to benefit the community. This means that all profits which CitySprout makes are invested back into distributing more free decks.

Further down the track, we intend to deliver hands-on workshops about urban plants. This is with the aim of removing as many barriers as possible from people seeking education about the natural world which they live in.

Another part of being a CIC is, if we ever choose to fold CitySprout then all it's assets are passed on to another CIC or charity. Our nominated charity is Black2Nature who do brilliant work to people visibly of colour into nature.

Entering and winning the Woodland Trust's Igniting Innovation competition was a turning point for the project. The game was funded £6000. This has gone towards illustration, this website and the first round of manufacture, including freely distributing 100 decks.

There's something incredibly empowering about having a leading charity put trust in you and your project. Apart from monthly mentoring and options for additional support, they completely leave us to it. The competition is open to all 16-25 year olds with an idea which could help the natural world, and we couldn't recommend entering enough.

Start-Up Funding...

Thanks to this startup funding from the Woodland Trust, we now mostly rely on profits made from selling CitySprout and donations.

CitySprout wouldn't be the same without the help from lots of lovely people. Big big thank yous to everyone who's helped, however big or small.

In particular, huge thanks to: Tammie, Hazel, Racheal, Paul, Xander, El & Alina.
